The University of Cape Coast, School of Agriculture is set to begin a major project to assist small scale famers in the country.
The Revenue Diversification Pathways in Africa project will be implemented through bio-based and Circular Agricultural innovations (DIVAGRI). The project which will span 48 months includes beneficiaries from the University of Cape Coast and the crops research institute at Mankesim.
Speaking on the ATLANTIC WAVE , a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Agriculture Engineering, Dr. Francis Kumi explained that the project is being piloted to provide technologies that will enhance small-scale farming activities and make the business more lucrative.

He said ” most of the times the technology that we try to import are once that are not made for our conditions but this particular ones are geared towards helping the subsistence farmer to be able to practice and make good use of whatever technolgy is available for use.”
According to Dr Kumi, there are about seven different technologies that are going to be used for the piloting. There will also be an inclusion of a business model where farmers are going to benefit from through increased income generation.
Dr. Kumi again indicated that at the moment a baseline work has been instituted to collect data on the challenges facing these small-scale farmers which we inform their line of direction.
