As part of its efforts to conserve the environment, the government will begin planting five million trees today, Friday, June 11, 2021.
The Forestry Commission and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources are driving the effort.
The public has been asked to actively participate in the effort via media publications and public broadcasts by obtaining free seeds from the government via local Forestry Commission district offices or district assemblies for planting.
In the meanwhile, Parliament has adjourned today’s session owing to the exercise.
The House decided to adjourn the session in order for Members of Parliament to participate in the tree-planting activity in their individual constituencies.
Today, which has been designated as “Green Ghana Day,” President Akufo-Addo is also slated to plant a tree.
While introducing the program earlier this week, Minister of Lands and Natural Resources Samuel Abu Jinapor said that it is an investment in the future.
“As part of the initiative, we’re trying to figure out a formula for planting trees that are economically viable. The Timber, Wawa, Nim, Rosewood, and Shea trees are the ones we’re talking about. The reasoning for this intervention is because by planting trees, we are also making a long-term investment,” he said.
“We cannot sit back and watch as our trees, flora, and animals are wiped out,” President Akufo-Addo said in a video encouraging Ghanaians to support the project earlier this month.
“Our entire life is linked to the survival of trees,” he added, adding that “we cannot live as humans without the oxygen supplied by trees.”
“As a result, the tree-planting activity on Friday, June 11 will guarantee that we are not just spreading seeds for one day, but for generations to come…
I urge all Ghanaians to join this clarion cry and contribute to the protection of our environment.”
