Alban Bagbin, Speaker of Parliament, is dissatisfied with what he describes as a “bad security setup” in Parliament.
The Speaker argues that this jeopardizes the House’s security situation.
Alban Bagbin, speaking at the inauguration of the Parliamentary Service Board, said the security of Parliament should be revisited.
“We have no power over outsiders entering and exiting the building, which jeopardizes the welfare of Parliament and its members. Break-ins and robberies have occurred on several occasions.”
A man, believed to be 35 years old, attempted suicide in the House in 2018.
The man who attempted suicide was said to have asked to speak with Joseph Mensah, the MP for Kwesimintim, who was unavailable at the time.
The unfortunate incident was averted thanks to Parliament’s defense, and the man was later apprehended by the police.
Following that, Parliament issued a statement urging people who wish to see hearings from the public gallery to follow the House’s attendance guidelines.
Alban Bagbin also charged members of the 8th Parliamentary Service Board to work to improve the Drafting Unit of the Parliamentary Service, among other units, so that it can assist Members of Parliament in introducing Private Members’ Bills.

According to Article 124 (2) of the 1992 Constitution, “there shall be a Parliamentary Service Board consisting of the Speaker as Chairman, four other members all of whom shall be named by the Speaker, functioning on the recommendation of a Committee of Parliament, and the Clerk to Parliament.”
Mr Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Leader of Government Business; Mr Haruna Iddrisu, Minority Leader; Mr Abraham Ossei Aidoo, former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament and former Majority Leader, Mr Johnson Asiedu-Nketiah, and Mr Cyril Nsiah, Clerk of Parliament, are all members of the Board, which is chaired by the Speaker.
The six-member board was appointed after the Speaker received a recommendation from the Advisory Committee of Parliament.
