The Ministry of Food and Agriculture says inter-ministerial attention would be paid to the “worrying” questions about a shortage of demand for eggs from local poultry farms.
Bagbara Tanko, the Ministry’s PRO, did not include any additional details on this development during an appearance on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, 12th April, 2021.
“It is a source of concern for any Ghanaian and the ministry, but I believe we should have an inter-ministerial dialogue about it moving forward.”
In his remarks on the subject, he said, “I won’t be able to provide timelines, but there will undoubtedly be a resolution.”
Mr. Tanko went on to say that the Finance, Education, and Trade and Industries ministries would be included in these talks.
According to Kofi Asare, Executive Director of Africa Education Watch, the main cause of this issue is that Senior High Schools have been unable to obtain eggs in accordance with previous patterns due to a shortage of funds.
The NGO discovered that consumer turmoil was triggered by a shortage of demand for eggs by Senior High Schools as part of its study into the effect of school closures on the poultry industry during the coronavirus pandemic.
Since the Buffer Stock Company can not buy perishable products, schools acquire the eggs directly.
Mr. Tanko acknowledged that something had evidently gone wrong this year that needed to be investigated, as these issues had not arisen recently.
“We haven’t had this dilemma since 2007,” says the speaker, “so something went wrong somehow… the right to buy from these farmers.”
“Clearly, somebody hasn’t done their job well somewhere that I can’t explain,” he said.
Mr. Asare also said on the Citi Breakfast Show that “no policy order compels schools to even purchase the eggs.”
As a result, mackerel is the only protein accessible during the money struggles.
According to Africa Education Watch’s investigations, “it was found that a certain firm had the contract to provide mackerel to all of the campuses.”
He said, “The Mackerels are called Senior High School Mackerel and are shipped from China.”
