The University of Cape Coast is set to soon roll out a work-study programme for needy but brilliant students of the university.
According to the Pro Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Dora Edu-Buandoh, the programme forms part of the university’s effort to eliminate financial barriers and create friendly work and study environment for needy but brilliant students.
Speaking at the maiden University of Cape Coast Scholarship Awards ceremony, Prof. Edu-Buandoh said the initiative will open more opportunities for financially handicapped students who may not have scholarships to also pursue higher education.
She indicated that “a major component of the mandate of the student financial support office is to set up a work study program where needy but brilliant and promising students can work on campus in some of the university’s distance program centers on hourly bases to earn some money without compromising their studies”.
The Vice Chancellor for the University of Cape Coast Prof. Johnson NyarkoBoampong on his part reiterated the university’s commitment to providing support to its students.
He called on more benevolent organizations to support the scheme and charged beneficiaries to use the sponsorship judiciously.
“We expect that other organizations will come to support the scheme so that we can extend the help to many other students. And for those who have also received the scholarship award, we want you to use what you have obtained judiciously to enhance your academic performance so that the university can boast of implementing this scholarship scheme because we know that in the end, it will help our students achieve something higher” he added.
The Paramount Chief of the Oguaa Traditional Area Osaberima Kwesi Atta II lauded the scholarship initiative by the university and charged the beneficiaries to also extend helping hands to others when they are better positioned.
“To those who have been privileged enough to have been given these awards, one good thing deserves another. Today is your day and by the grace of God you have gotten this scholarship when you go out there, always keep your mind on what has happened to you today and lend a helping hand to anyone you come across who will need your support” Osaberima advised.
