One of the youngsters who escaped death on Sunday night, when at least 10 teenagers drowned in Apam in the Central Region, told how he had survived the horror.
He told Citi News that he had survived the ordeal only after he had been struck by a powerful tidal wave that had brought him ashore.
According to 15-year-old Kwaku Abbrew, the place where they were swimming was familiar to them, and a powerful tidal wave triggered the disaster.
“When we were being carried away by the sea, we managed to swim back but realised that some of our friends had been carried away by the tidal wave. We were over 25.”

“The second tidal wave was more dangerous as most of our friends were carried away. We normally go to the area to swim, but I was a bit surprised by what happened. We normally go to the very spot to swim on Sundays,” Kwaku Abbrew said.
The victims of the drowning incident were between 13 and 18 years of age.
Some sources also suggested that 20 teenagers might have drowned in the crash.
A new information from the police has revealed that as the teens were swimming, a strong tidal wave blew, causing them to drown on Sunday night.
The search team attempted unsuccessfully to retrieve the bodies that night.
Four of the dead bodies of teens were retrieved the next morning, and more bodies were discovered during the day by fishermen assisting in rescue efforts.
A total of 12 bodies were recovered; 10 males and two females, according to Bismark Baisie Nkum, District Chief Executive Officer for the city.
Three of the patients who were rescued received care at the St. Luke Catholic Hospital in Apam and assisted the police in their investigation.
The remains of the dead are yet to be turned over to these relatives.
