The Disease Control Officer at the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem Municipality (KEEA), Mr. Adom Boateng says consultations are ongoing to regulate the entry of people to the fish market at Elmina.
Central region currently stands third on the distribution table of regions affected with the coronavirus; with 52 confirmed cases in KEEA municipality, making it one of the hottest spots for community spread infections in the region.

According to Mr. Boateng, congestion at the fish market hinders adherence of citizenry to the Covid-19 preventive protocols and therefore the need to enforce measures against the spread of the virus.
Speaking to ATL FM News Mr Boateng said “the number of cases that we have received and confirmed out of the routine surveillance puts a lot of burden on us to regulate the fish market which brings a lot of people from all over the country”
According to him, further consultation is currently ongoing with stakeholders on the way forward in enforcing the regulation.
There have been reports of some residents within the fishing community expressing doubt over the existence the virus. Some say fishermen are immune to the virus while others believe it is a “disease for the rich”. Some have also expressed doubt because they claim they have not seen anyone with the virus.
But Mr. Adom Boateng believes such doubts are baseless and rather exposes residents to more danger when they refuse to adhere to the health guidelines due to their doubts, saying “it is important for citizens to change their perception about the non-existence of the virus in the country”.
