Dr. Kwame Amponsa-Achiano, Program Manager, Expanded Immunization Program, Ghana Health Service, announced that 30,500 Ghanaians had been vaccinated against Coronavirus on 3 March 2021.
“Out of this, approximately 16,990 are males, while 13,450 are females,” he added.
He stated this in an interview with the media on the sidelines of the National Delegate Congress of Community Health Nurses, Ghana (CHNG) on Thursday, March 4, 2021.
The three-day congress organized by the CHNG and the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association, was to nominate practical representatives to manage the affairs of community health nurses.
It was under the theme: “Harnessing Community Nurses’ Prospects, Fulcrum to Attain Preventive Health as a Nation.”

Dr. Amponsa-Achiano, the guest speaker at the function, was thrilled at the attendance for the vaccination activity, claiming it has been remarkable so far.
He commended Ghanaians for coming out in their numbers to sponsor the vaccinations. “Initially because of the hesitancy and conspiracy theories, we were a bit skeptical and cautiously hopeful, but the turnout has been impressive,” he said.
However, the strong attendance was due to the awareness-raising campaign conducted by the GHS prior to the registration of the exercise. He also announced that about 11,500 frontline health employees had also been vaccinated.
The Government of Ghana is looking to vaccinate about 20 million people against the virus upon receiving 600,000 doses of Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine free of charge from the COVAX facility on 24 February.
Dr Amponsa-Achiano said the GHS was considering extending the duration of the exercise from seven to 14 days due to some challenges including tablet malfunctions and overcrowding witnessed in some districts and regions. He commended front-line health staff, in particular community health nurses, for their selfless efforts to provide healthcare to hard-to-reach populations around the world.
