Glovo, one of the world’s largest multi-category distribution companies, has expressed interest in collaborating with the government to address the country’s plastic waste management problems in Ghana.
“I know there are intentions to make Accra the cleanest city in Africa, so that is something we understand, and the food industry is one of the biggest contributors to plastic waste,” said Madam Pearlyn Budu, General Manager for Glovo Ghana.
Madam Budu, who spoke at the company’s Ghana launch, said the company had a lot of social impact initiatives focusing on waste management and that “we also aim to collaborate with the government on plastic disposal.”
Small companies, she said, could benefit from them and they could also help them expand their customer base.
“We’d like to see opportunities from the government to assist in the growth of small businesses. We also have Women in Technology and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) projects,” she continued.
The distribution start-up entered Africa in 2018 and is now present in four nations, including Kenya, Uganda, and Côte d’Ivoire, according to the General Manager.
Ghana, she said, will be the firm’s second market in West Africa and the fifth African country where it had set up shop.
She explained that the on-demand platform aimed to make Ghanaians’ lives easier by offering convenient delivery services.
“Users of Glovo would be able to obtain orders from local restaurants, supermarkets, and companies anywhere in Accra,” she said.

Users could simply log in to the Glovo app and order food, groceries, and drinks, or they could send a courier to pick up what they wanted, according to Madam Budu.
The app also has a feature called the “anything” category, which allows users to order anything from restaurants, grocery stores, pharmacies, and retail stores.
“We are very excited to launch in Ghana,” she said. We’re introducing a brand new service to Accra that puts comfort at your fingertips.”
She explained that, given the severity of the COVID-19 pandemic, it was important for everyone to remain at home when possible, and that their service would be of great assistance to them without them having to leave their homes or offices.
“Business owners would benefit greatly from this program. We have introduced convenience and affordability to all residents in a city like Accra, where traffic is a major issue,” she added.
