According to the Foreign Ministry, the government has reached an agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin to allow Ghanaians, particularly students, to travel safely through war zones on his territory.
According to Deputy Foreign Minister Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong, the Red Cross has also agreed to assist in the evacuation of Ghanaian citizens caught up in Kharkiv.
“As of this morning, after lobbying the Russian authorities and President, President Putin has finally said they will open a safe passage for citizens caught in Kharkiv and other areas, and that will start immediately,” he added.
The Deputy Minister made the announcement on Friday morning, when they received the second batch of Ghanaian nationals who had fled to Poland from Ukraine.

The government has been working with diplomatic missions, honorary consuls, and others to have all Ghanaian people evacuated to safer zones.
Meanwhile, Mr Ampratwum-Sarpong has reported that the Hungarian government has decided to accept affected Ghanaian students who choose to move to institutions or further their study in Hungary.
He added that “they are prepared to match whatever facilities, whatever financial obligations being paid in Hungary, so there is a window of opportunity that all is not lost.”
In addition, the Ghana Psychology Council has stated its willingness to give psychiatric assistance to Ghanaian students who have returned from Ukraine. According to the Council, this is necessary owing to the trauma they have experienced.
