The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has asked the Commonwealth Secretariat to investigate and sanction the incumbent government for what it terms bad governance and human rights abuse.
At a press conference in Accra today, Monday, the NDC’s General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, said that the appeal is intended to raise the attention of the international organization to instances of judicial abuse, political persecution, and violations of human rights.
These behaviors, according to Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, are contrary to the standards and traditions of Commonwealth of Nations members.
“Since assuming the reins of power in 2016, the message of physical violence against political opponents that Nana Addo preached and championed before the 2016 general elections has turned into structural, institutional and systematic forms of violence in the form of human rights violations, harassment, and political persecutions against members and supporters of the NDC,” he said.
Aside from political opponents, the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has imprisoned and jailed many journalists.
Accra FM’s Kwabena Bobbie Ansah was recently detained for fake news publishing and abusive behavior, while Power FM’s Oheneba Boamah Bennie was imprisoned for two weeks and fined GH3,000 for contempt of court.
There have been several appeals for President Nana Addo Dankwa’s actions to show his support for human rights advocacy.
