Matildas Secure Victory Over Chinese Taipei with Solid Performance

The Matildas broke their streak of back-to-back losses to Brazil with a confidence-boosting 3-1 victory over Chinese Taipei in a friendly match at Melbourne’s AAMI Park. However, the game wasn’t without setbacks, as Western United striker Chloe Logarzo, making her first appearance since October 2022, was forced off in the first half due to a clash of heads. She is currently being assessed for a possible concussion, which may impact her availability for the Matildas’ second match against Chinese Taipei on Saturday in Geelong. Logarzo’s Injury.

Logarzo’s injury came as a disappointment for the 29-year-old, who had endured a long recovery from an ACL injury. Interim head coach Tom Sermanni shared an update: “The doctors are still looking at her. She has got the old egg on the side of her head at the moment, but she feels good. She is devastated about having to go off after waiting so long to get back in the team. Hopefully, it’s not too bad, and she might be in the mix for the next game.”

She is devastated about having to go off after waiting so long to get back in the team. Hopefully, it’s not too bad, and she might be in the mix for the next game.”

A Strong Start Despite Challenges

The Matildas began the match with a reshuffled lineup, featuring seven changes from their previous games. This included full debuts for Natasha Prior and Sharn Freier, who made an immediate impact by scoring two early goals in the opening 12 minutes. Despite these promising moments, Chinese Taipei responded before halftime through a goal by Chen Jin-wen, creating some nervous energy among the 26,795 fans in attendance.

Tom Sermanni admitted that the team lost rhythm after conceding the goal but praised the substitutes for injecting fresh energy. Bryleeh Henry, one of the substitutes, sealed the win with a late goal, ensuring a 3-1 final score.

Adjustments Pay Off

Sermanni, pleased with the team’s overall performance, acknowledged the challenges of integrating new players with limited preparation time. “We had one training session the day before the game with a significantly different group of players,” he explained. “Throwing them onto the field with a bit of guidance and hoping it all comes together is always a challenge.”

He described the victory as a “good solid win” and emphasized the importance of getting multiple players on the scoresheet. Despite the hurdles, Sermanni commended the team’s resilience and ability to close out the game effectively.
