Mistakes and Lack of Confidence
Bothroyd was really frustrated with Spurs’ ongoing mistakes. He pointed out that they make these errors every week.
They can’t keep getting away with these silly mistakes. It’s happening all the time! he said on The Optus Sport Football Podcast.
He also mentioned that after they gave up a goal, the players seemed to retreat instead of pushing forward. This goes against the attacking style manager Ange Postecoglou wants.
Tottenham needs movement and players who are not afraid on the ball. Ange has said they need to be confident and keep passing it around, Bothroyd added.
But after conceding, many players looked unsure and didn’t take charge. He noted that playing possession football needs constant movement and a willingness to receive the ball, which Spurs just didn’t do.
Struggling to Regain Control
Mark Schwarzer, another former Socceroo, agreed with Bothroyd. He noted that Tottenham struggled to find their rhythm after Villa scored early.
After that first goal, Tottenham was shaky. Kinsky was nervous, which is understandable, and that makes it tough to start a game, Schwarzer said.
With Villa playing solid defense and ready to counterattack, Spurs had a hard time. Their lack of confidence made it tough to break through a well-organized team.
Postecoglou’s Future Under Pressure
Now that Tottenham is out of both cup competitions, their only shot at winning something is in the Europa League. But they are sitting in 14th place in the Premier League, and worries about Postecoglou’s future are growing.
Despite the pressure, Schwarzer thinks the manager deserves more time.
I think he will get more time. Injuries have hit them hard, just like any team, even Manchester City. The difference is, City has a deeper squad. Spurs don’t have that kind of depth, and the injuries are really hurting them, he said.
Bothroyd added that Spurs might struggle to find a better manager if Chairman Daniel Levy decides to move on from Postecoglou.
If they get rid of Ange, who would they even want to hire? That’s the big question, he said. It’s easy to say ‘fire Ange,’ but there aren’t great options out there.
He mentioned someone like Andoni Iraola as a possible candidate but noted that he probably wouldn’t leave his current job mid-season.
As Spurs look for some consistency, both pundits feel that Postecoglou needs time and support. But if Tottenham doesn’t get better soon, the pressure on him will only grow.
