The United States Embassy in Accra has opened thousands of additional non-immigrant visa appointment slots to accommodate an expected surge in travel demand from Ghana ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Embassy announced that many of the new visa interview slots are immediately available, urging Ghanaians planning to travel to the United States for the tournament to apply early to avoid last-minute challenges.

In a public advisory, the Embassy confirmed that it continues to process non-immigrant visas and specifically encouraged football fans without valid U.S. visas to begin their applications well ahead of time.

“Planning to travel to the United States for the 2026 World Cup? If you do not have a valid U.S. visa, we encourage you to apply early,” the Embassy stated.

Anticipating World Cup travel demand

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, scheduled for June–July 2026, will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico and will feature an expanded 48-team format, making it the largest tournament in FIFA’s history.

With Ghana’s Black Stars expected to compete, travel interest among Ghanaian supporters is projected to rise sharply. Embassy officials say the early release of visa slots is intended to ease pressure on the application system and prevent backlogs closer to the tournament.

Past global sporting events have seen heavy congestion in visa processing timelines, particularly in countries with high travel demand. The Embassy’s move is therefore seen as a proactive step to ensure smoother travel planning for genuine visitors.

Warning against visa fraud

Alongside the announcement, the Embassy cautioned applicants against using unauthorised third-party agents or fraudulent websites that often exploit periods of high demand.

Applicants were reminded to schedule visa interviews only through official U.S. government platforms, warning that the use of middlemen does not increase the chances of approval and may expose applicants to scams.

Approval still subject to requirements

The Embassy stressed that while more appointment slots are now available, visa approval is not automatic. Applicants must meet all eligibility requirements and successfully complete the interview process.

Securing an appointment is only the first step, officials noted, adding that applicants should ensure their documentation is accurate and complete before attending interviews.

The expansion of visa appointments is expected to benefit not only football fans, but also travellers seeking to visit family, attend business engagements or engage in tourism activities during the World Cup period.
