The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) on Thursday morning narrowly prevented what could have been a catastrophic explosion after a fuel tanker carrying 54,000 litres of petrol overturned at Dominasi Toboasi on the Mankessim-Fosu Road.
The accident, which occurred at approximately 10:00 a.m., involved a tanker with registration number AS 5140-24. The Vehicle fell on its side, spilling highly flammable petrol across the highway stretch.
The cause of the accident has not yet been determined.
Speaking on ATLFM’s Mantew Mu Nsem, the Deputy Central Regional PRO of the Fire Service, ADO1 Ebenezer Fiifi Daadzie confirmed that the situation is now under control.
He said firefighters from the Mankessim fire station were dispatched immediately upon receiving the distress call.
According to ADO1 Ebenezer Fiifi Daadzie, the team arrived with specialized resources to neutralize the risk of a fire.
He, however, expressed deep concern, stating they were met with a dangerous site where local residents rushed toward the spill with gallons to siphon fuel.
“The ground is already hot, fuel has spilled on the ground and oxygen is in the air. Explosion can happen at any time, so why do people endanger their lives in this way,” he continued.

ADOI Daadzie described the act as a “deadly gamble” and advised the public “do not rush to collect fuel when fuel tanker gets involved in an accident.”
He further urged commuters travelling the Mankessim-Fosu route to exercise caution and follow the directions given them.
