The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has intensified its fight against examination malpractice, confirming the arrest of 14 individuals, including students, teachers, and invigilators during the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The arrests, which took place at centres such as Yeji Senior High School, Abbott College in Asante Bekwai, and Atwima Kwanwoma Presbyterian SHS, form part of a nationwide operation to clamp down on irregularities. Officials say the number could rise as investigations continue.
One of the most dramatic incidents occurred at the Adventist Day Senior High School centre in Kumasi, where the exam hall was closed after several mobile phones were seized from candidates. Those students were relocated to WAEC’s regional office, where they wrote their papers under strict monitoring.
In Kasoa, two impersonators were sentenced to six months in prison each, while their accomplice received an eight-month jail term.
At Kukurantumi, a school proprietor and a teacher were arrested for allegedly creating a WhatsApp platform to leak questions to students. Similarly, at Abura Dunkwa, a man identified as Ebenezer Fynn was picked up for impersonation and is currently assisting with investigations.
WAEC has stressed that results from all implicated schools will be subjected to rigorous checks, reaffirming its commitment to protecting the credibility of the exams.
