He made only two bogeys all day and even holed an incredible 66-foot birdie putt at the 13th that sparked his hot streak to the finish. Afterwards, he described the final stretch as one of the smoothest putting patches of his career and said he enjoys courses where accurate play is rewarded.
Ryder Cup Push and Fleetwood’s Chase
The 27-year-old is on the verge of earning an automatic place in Europe’s Ryder Cup team alongside Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose. Fleetwood is his closest challenger after carding a five-under 65, maintaining the impressive form he showed at the St. Jude Classic last week where he was narrowly beaten by Rose. The England star is still searching for his first PGA Tour title and will hope to keep the pressure on MacIntyre in the second round.
Scheffler Continues Hot Form
World number one Scottie Scheffler remains firmly in contention after opening with a 66. He birdied three of his final four holes and said the rain made the course much softer and more forgiving compared to the earlier conditions. Scheffler, who is enjoying an incredible run of twelve straight top-eight finishes this year, leads the FedEx Cup standings and is targeting another strong week.
Mixed Day for McIlroy and Lowry
Rory McIlroy had a difficult start to his round, making three bogeys in the first six holes. However, the Northern Irishman fought back well to finish with a level-par 70. McIlroy had skipped last week’s FedEx Cup event knowing that his place in the Tour Championship was already secure, and he looked a little rusty early on. Shane Lowry also shot a level-par 70 after an up-and-down round. The Irishman began with three birdies but then lost momentum, dropping a shot at the seventh and mixing more birdies and bogeys on the back nine.
