Keegan Bradley Weighs Option of Playing Captain at Ryder Cup
In a rare twist for a pre-tournament press conference, Keegan Bradley spent little time discussing his BMW Championship title defence or the host course, Caves Valley Golf Club. Instead, the spotlight shifted to his role as captain of the US Ryder Cup team, the event’s venue at Bethpage Black, and whether he might select himself for the team if he fails to qualify automatically. Currently ranked 10th in Ryder Cup points, Bradley has become one of the most intriguing storylines as the FedEx Cup play-offs roll on toward the Tour Championship.

Chasing Automatic Qualification
The top six players in the Ryder Cup standings after this week will secure automatic spots for the September 26–28 clash with Europe in Farmingdale, New York. Scottie Scheffler, J.J. Spaun, and Xander Schauffele have already locked in their places. Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa, and Ben Griffin sit ahead of Bradley, meaning that if he falls short of the top six, he could use one of six captain’s picks on himself after the Tour Championship. Bradley insists his focus remains on performance, saying his goal is to play well regardless of his captaincy status.
The Last Playing Captain and McIlroy’s View
Arnold Palmer was the last Ryder Cup playing captain back in 1963. Rory McIlroy considers Bradley among the United States’ top 12 players but questions whether the dual role is manageable. Bradley acknowledged the challenge but pointed out that he is having one of his best seasons, with victories at the 2024 BMW Championship and the Travelers Championship in June.
Support from Peers and Vice Captains
Ranked 14th in the FedEx Cup standings and 12th in the Official World Golf Ranking, Bradley admits there is no modern precedent for his situation. He has leaned heavily on experienced vice captains, including Jim Furyk, for guidance. Although uncertain about what will happen, Bradley says he will judge himself like any other player fighting for selection.
Emotional Backing from Teammates
The support from fellow professionals has moved Bradley deeply. Scheffler, Rickie Fowler, and Patrick Cantlay have all praised his leadership and intensity, with Scheffler calling him a standout captain. Bradley says the respect from his peers is one of the greatest honours he has felt in his career, adding that building closer relationships with his teammates has been one of the most rewarding parts of the captaincy.
