The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has officially confirmed the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from the regional bloc, effective Wednesday, January 29, 2025.
In a press statement, ECOWAS acknowledged the departure of the three nations and assured that measures are in place to minimize disruptions for citizens and businesses affected by the move.
Despite the withdrawal, ECOWAS has outlined transitional arrangements, including the continued recognition of national passports and identity cards bearing the ECOWAS logo.

Goods and services from the three countries will also continue to enjoy benefits under the ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme (ETLS).
Additionally, citizens of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger will retain their rights to visa-free travel, residence, and business establishment within ECOWAS territories until further directives are issued.
The regional bloc reiterated its openness to future cooperation with the departing nations while working on a framework to define their long-term engagement with ECOWAS.
