Vice President and Chairman of the Ghana Police Council, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has called for a peaceful, transparent, and incident-free 2024 election, urging the Ghana Police Service to maintain its high standards of professionalism.
Speaking at a ceremony in Accra yesterday, where 430 newly promoted Assistant Superintendents of Police were commissioned, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the vital role of the police in safeguarding democracy and public confidence.
He commended the police for their exemplary conduct in past elections, crediting them for their role in preserving peace and stability stating “For this year’s election, it is important to take stock and know that we have been here and done it before.
Since 1992, we have succeeded in organizing election after election, and this year’s election will be no different, we, as a nation, have become good at it, with the police at the center of our election security task force.”
Acknowledging rising political tensions, he stressed the need for vigilance, cautioning against complacency, revealing that “Every election presents its own nuanced situation. We are assured of a successful 2024 general election. However, we must not rest on our previous achievements. Reinforcing the need for fair, neutral, and firm policing throughout the election period.”
Reflecting on the police’s exemplary conduct during recent voter registration and exhibition exercises, Dr. Bawumia expressed confidence that the same professionalism would guide the police during the main elections.
“The good conduct of officers during the recent voter registration and exhibition exercises provides a great blueprint and confidence for the main elections. Ghana Police Service, you have done it before, and we are counting on you to do it again,” he noted.
Dr. Bawumia further assured the police of continued government support in training, logistics, and equipment to strengthen their election security management and broader law enforcement responsibilities.
He concluded by reaffirming the nation’s reliance on the Ghana Police Service to set the tone for peaceful elections, saying, “By maintaining high professional standards in the discharge of your duties, you are setting the perfect tone for the nation to follow in delivering a peaceful and incident-free general election.”
