The closed hunting season for this year has officially been launched in Mankessim, Central Region, with a firm warning to hunters to allow wildlife species in Ghana’s forests to breed.
The four-month restriction, running from August 1 to December 1, is part of the Forestry Commission’s annual Closed Season initiative to protect and conserve animal species, enhance biodiversity, and address climate change challenges.
During this period, hunting, capturing, or destroying wild animals is prohibited, except for grasscutters, which require a special license from the Wildlife Division of the Forestry Commission.
Deputy Minister of Land and Natural Resources, Mr. Akwasi Konadu, stressed the importance of adhering to these regulations stating that “Hunters must obtain valid licenses for hunting grasscutters or face sanctions.”
He also highlighted the recent Wildlife Resource Management Act 2023 (Act 1115), which aims to improve wildlife management with updated strategies and international best practices.
“The new law has introduced enhanced penalties and sanctions to deter wildlife crimes,” Mr. Konadu added. “We will soon launch awareness and sensitization exercises to define the roles of various stakeholders in its implementation.”
Chief Executive of the Forestry Commission, Mr. John Allotey, noted the threat of poaching to national parks and resource reserves, emphasizing the importance of wildlife for the country’s development, including its role in providing herbs and medicine.
Mr. Allotey explained that licenses and permits are necessary for activities related to wildlife resources, with fines for violations during the closed season.
Osagyefo Amanfo Edu VI, Omanhene of Mankessim Traditional Area also urged for collective efforts in wildlife protection emphasizing “The sustainable management of our plants and animal resources requires support from all, especially chiefs and communities.”
“We hope that everyone will comply with the policies during these four months for the benefit of our wildlife and natural resources.” he said.
