The Electoral Commission of Ghana has refuted media claims of creating 25 new constituencies.
The EC in a statement on October 31, 2023, emphasized that it is “only creating one Constituency which is the Guan Constituency in the Oti Region.”
It therefore urges the public to disregard the report of the EC creating 25 new Constituencies ahead of the 2024 General Elections.
The Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) declared its intention to establish the Guan Constituency in the Oti Region, as it presented a Constitutional Instrument (C.I.) to Parliament on Tuesday, October 31.
This follows the creation of the Guan District Assembly in November 2020.
The creation of the Guan District Assembly stems from a Legislative Instrument that was presented to Parliament in 2019 by the Minister of Local Government, Decentralisation, and Rural Development.
This administrative district had remained vacant since the establishment of the Oti Region, which was separated from the Volta Region.
The longstanding desire for the establishment of a region specifically for the Oti people dates back to 1954, even before Ghana gained its independence.
However, it wasn’t until President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo exercised his executive powers that the region was finally created.
The C.I. instrument presented to Parliament on Tuesday, October 31 when passed will allow for the people of the Guan Constituency to participate in the 2024 parliamentary elections to elect their own Parliamentary representative.
