A Distinguished Professor at Western University, Canada Professor Isaac Luginaah has reiterated calls for educational institutions to be cautious with the use of various Artificial Intelligence as they strive to be the best through Benchmarking.
He attests to the fact that it has been challenging for some students and even senior researchers to avoid the use of artificial intelligence such as chat GPT and others to produce their work for academic activities.
Speaking to ATL FM NEWS after a Research Excellence Guest lecture on the topic: “Building a Research Excellence Career/ Institution in the 21st Century: the Importance of Quality and Benchmarking” at the University of Cape Coast, Prof. Luginaah stated that research works should be critically evaluated with a software that can detect AI works to enhance originalities.
“There are now new software that are coming out like Turnitin. People are able to determine whether an essay was out of chat GPT. I’m hoping that those types of software may help whereby an essay can be submitted to instead of turnitin to those kinds of software to see if it’s a chat GPT generation.”
Prof. Luginaah said while AI has the potential to personalize education, improve administrative efficiency, and augment research capabilities, concerns around data privacy, ethical implications, and the dehumanization of education also abound.
He further stated that although it is difficult to eliminate the use of AI in educational institutions, educational institutions can make informed decisions that align with their ethical guidelines, practical constraints, and educational philosophies.
