Samuel Atta Kyea, Chairperson of the Parliamentary Ad-Hoc Committee investigating the leaked audio plotting the removal of Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare says the committee is dedicated to ensuring a comprehensive and fair examination of all relevant evidence before drawing any conclusions.
Addressing the press after the committee’s sitting on Thursday, August 31, 2023, he indicated that the committee is committed to a thorough and unbiased investigation.
Meanwhile, he notes that it is not every testimony which is for public consumption as some testimonies and pieces of evidence might have national security implications.
Therefore, he said the in-camera hearing is one of the ways to address a problem.
“So, when we come to terms with that, why not? We will invite him to give us in-camera testimony. We will not stop them from tendering evidence which would aid what we are doing. Guess what? Even the members of the committee are not enemies of the witnesses at all or the people involved and therefore if you start doing what they call evidence gagging, then you are biased, and you have an issue.”
The former NPP Northern Regional Chairman Mr. Bugri Naabu on Monday, August 28, 2023, confirmed the veracity of the contentious audio when he appeared before the committee.
According to Bugri Naabu, the crucial conversation, which sparked controversy, indeed transpired between himself and three other high-ranking Police Officers.
He further identified the three police officers as Commander Asare, COP Mensah and Superintendent Gyebi.
However, when COP George Alex Mensah appeared before the Committee on Thursday, August 31, he insisted that Mr Naabu lied to the parliamentary ad-hoc committee.
He also strongly refuted the authenticity of the tape and claimed that the tape had been doctored and did not accurately reflect the content of the original conversation he had with the former NPP Northern Regional Chairman.
COP Mensah indicated that he would be unable to verify several details on the tape, and firmly stated that there was no plan to remove the IGP.
On his part, Superintendent Emmanuel Gyebi emphatically refuted any connection with Bugri Naabu.
During his appearance before the committee tasked with investigating the leaked tape, Superintendent Gyebi vehemently denied any knowledge of Bugri Naabu, dismissing the suggestion that they had collaborated on a pre-arranged plan with two other senior police officers to discuss the potential removal of the IGP with President Nana Akufo-Addo. The Director of the Cyber Crime Unit and Child Protection at the CID Headquarters, also affirmed that although he maintained a longstanding friendship with the other two implicated police officers, he was not part of the plot to oust the IGP.
