Project managers have been urged to take their work seriously to avoid waste whenever they have to see to the completion of a project.
The Immediate Past Vice Chancellor of the University of Mines and Technology, Professor Jerry Yaw Kuma believes when individuals, organizations and institutions prioritize proper planning and management in their day-to-day businesses, it will ensure that resources are managed well to achieve outlined objectives.
“You are given a job to do which has finances attached to it, you start it and the finances skyrocket three times although you have not finished. Do you think it is just good business, normal business? It all boils down to project management. We need to be serious,” he stressed.
Prof. Kuma was speaking at the opening ceremony of the 1st International Project Management Boot Camp which was held at the School of Graduate Studies at the University of Cape Coast (UCC).
The first-ever International Project Management Boot Camp has been put together by the Institute of Project Management Professionals (IPMP), Gyam Institute of Technology and Industrialization (GITI) and the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET).
The three-day event which commenced on Wednesday, August 23, 2023, will end on Friday, August 25, 2023.
The event has also brought together project management enthusiasts and experts to deliberate on subjects like Strategic Planning and Foresight, Project Planning and Initialization, Project Scheduling and Control, Project Execution and Scope Management.
Other subjects will also include Project Monitoring and Evaluation, Project Procurement Clinic, and Project Accounting and Finances, among others.
At the end of the conference, over 290 participants are expected to have their project management skills sharpened through knowledge sharing and networking.
The opening ceremony was graced by other speakers including Alexandre Caldas, Chair, UN Geospatial Network Director and Chief Country Outreach, Technology, Innovation and Big Data, UNEP (Guest Speaker); Professor David Ackah, Executive Director, IPMP Ghana; Prof Henry De-Graft Acquah, Dean of the School of Agriculture, UCC (Representative of the Vice Chancellor); Professor Elsie Effah Kaufmann, Dean, School of Engineering Sciences, University of Ghana.
Traditional leaders and faculty members from the University of Cape Coast, Cape Coast Technical University, and Takoradi Technical University among others, and engineering students were also in attendance.
