A Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South Constituency and Head, Zoe, Akyea and Co., Samuel Atta AKyea Esq has called on all legal professionals, especially lawyers to work towards achieving excellence in their work.
He said it is only the possession of excellence spirit that can make one become a legal luminary and stand tall among the lot in the practicing career.
Mr. Samuel Atta Akyea made this appeal to legal practitioners while delivering his keynote address at the University of Cape Coast Faculty of Law’s tenth Jurists’ CONFAB held on Friday, June 16, 2023.
To the Member of Parliament, excellence invokes distinction, greatness, perfection, pre-eminence, and superiority.
“You need an excellent spirit to become a bigger luminary. If a man claims he takes his fuel from God, then naturally he will have an excellent disposition towards his work. What will let a man or woman stand out in his or her career than the spirit of excellence? It is what you do when others say that they are tired, it is going beyond the mark. Sometimes the excellent personality sees sleep as an enemy. If you love your sleep, you reduce your power to deliver”.
He, however, entreated all legal professionals, most especially lawyers to invest much effort into their law practice to aid them achieve excellence.
“By the way, your Excellence is not like a designer suit you buy in a shop. You need to work hard to achieve it and maintain it. You need to culture your own self into excellence. My respective submission is that you cannot use ordinary effort to secure extraordinary results and rewards” he said
Speaking on the theme: the making of a legal luminary: the lawyer, Judge, and Legal Academy, the MP for Abuakwa South indicated that legal luminaries do not work alone adding that lawyers ought to develop and appreciate the spirit of teamwork.
“You will flourish and stand out strong if you believe in teamwork. You don’t make a mistake, and nobody can improve your thinking or correct you. You cannot be filled unless you are empty. Legal luminary does not work alone. He has the oxygen of teamwork…We need each other. You need someone, and someone needs you,” he added.
He also admonished lawyers, particularly law students to be of good character, and temperament as well as have good human relations to help their aspirations of becoming a legal luminary.
“You need to develop a good temperament and shock absorbers to engage difficult judges. Additionally, I bet to submit that if the emotional temperature of your client is equal to yours, then you fail. Never lose your rationality. In the final analysis, your warm personality, human relations, and excellent diagnosis will market you and keep your socks rising. Your appearance and environment are necessary levers to make you a legal luminary.” he added.
The Jurists’ Confab is an annual gathering of the Bar, Bench, and Academia that the Faculty of Law, the University of Cape Coast hosts with the aim of fostering dialogue between the legal fraternity, government agencies, industry, students, and members of the public on current issues impacting the legal system, legal practice and law-related professions in Ghana.
