Former president of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama says the commemoration of the June 4 Uprising needs to be done with uttermost respect and gratitude.
According to him, the Uprising “birthed the principles of probity and accountability adding that the events of the uprising must spur those in positions of leadership to work selflessly and tirelessly towards a brighter future for Ghana and uphold the legacy of previous leaders.
The June 4th Revolution was an uprising in Ghana in 1979 that arose due to a combination of corruption and perceived bad governance.
This led to frustration among the general public and misunderstandings within the Ghanaian army which resulted in the firing squad executing three former military heads of state and some senior military officials.
In a Facebook post, Mr. Mahama noted that the sacrifices of all who were involved in the catastrophic events of June 4, 1979, paved the way for the democracy and constitutional governance Ghana is currently enjoying.
Meanwhile, speaking at the 44th Anniversary celebration of the June 4 Uprising held at Hohoe in the Volta Region, the NDC Flagbearer urged the NDC to unite for victory come 2024.
He stated that there should be sufficient basis to work towards a change that helps reset the country and build the Ghana ‘we all want together.’
The theme for the 44th Anniversary celebration is “Saving Our Democracy: the Spirit of the June 4th”.
On her part, the Member of Parliament for Klottey Korle, Dr. Zanetor Agyemang- Rawlings urged NDC supporters to embrace the history of the party.
“The fact that this fourth Republic has been the most enduring is a testament to what the principles represented. This is your legacy. Be proud of it. Do not allow anybody to shame you about your history. June 4 is your legacy and that is what resulted in where we are today.”
