The National Democratic Congress has expressed worry about the consistent adjournment of the case of the Assin North Member of Parliament, James Gyakye Quayson by the Supreme Court.
The party says the Supreme Court’s failure to bring finality to the earlier court decision that stops Mr. James Gyakye Quayson from holding himself as MP for Assin North is a denial of the Assin North representation.
The Apex Court issued an injunction on Mr. James Gyakye Quayson in April 2022 from holding himself as a Member of Parliament of Assin North after being charged with forgery and perjury by the Attorney-General’s Office.
He is also accused of deceiving a public officer and knowingly making a false declaration in relation to his nationality and dual citizenship with Canada before the 2020 parliamentary elections.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, March 29 after the case was adjourned, the South Dayi MP, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor said the NDC is disappointed in the delay to bring closure to the case and described it as unfair.
“We got the indication that the court will sit and go into this matter, however brief that will be only for us to be told that it’s adjourned to next week Wednesday. No reason has been assigned just like that. It appears to be the trend these days, in fact, in my own case regarding the status of the two first ladies and the second ladies’ issue, this will be the 15th adjournment from last year April and it is not fair” he said.
To the NDC, the litigation has been made more economically painful for plaintiffs who come to court and other parties who are also held before the court.
The NDC is therefore asking the court to give concrete reasons behind the adjournment of cases of such cases.
For them, it is important that the status of James Gyakye Quayson is determined quickly to allow him to perform effectively his functions of office as an elected representative of the people of Assin North.
