The 1998-year group of the St. Augustine’s College past student’s union (APSU’98) has handed over a four-unit two-bedroom teachers’ flat as its legacy project for its alma mater.
The 11-month project worth 250 thousand dollars was unveiled during the college’s 93rd Anniversary Celebration held at the school’s premises on Saturday, 18th March 2023.
Addressing the media during the commissioning ceremony, the president of APSU’98-year group who doubled as the co-host of the 93rd Anniversary Celebration, Samuel Nii Adjei Annang said most teachers reside outside the school’s premise which according to him pose a challenge to them to give their best to help the school.
He added that the choice of staff apartment over other equally important projects stems from the need to bring the teachers closer to the students to enhance proper supervision, discipline, and improve academic performance.
“We have teachers living as far as Elmina. Can you imagine? And the nightlife is important here. The students need to go to Preps. They go astray if the teachers are not here to guide them. So basically, when we have families and the teachers on campus, it helps a lot for discipline” he said.
The headmaster of St. Augustine’s College, Mr. Henry Arthur-Gyan expressed his contentment over the project and the year group for bequeathing to their Alma meter.
According to him, all the previous legacy projects were students centered and therefore it was time for the teachers also to get their due from the old students to motivate them to offer their best for the school.
“This is what we call legacy project and this year’s Legacy project means a lot to me, the college staff, and all major stakeholders simply because year in, year out, such projects are geared towards students benefiting direct and staff benefiting indirectly. But this one is flat for staff to sleep in, have peace of mind and come back to teach the students better and that’s why the staff is enjoying directly”.
He also revealed that only 30% of the staff are housed on campus which makes controlling the students quite challenging therefore the newly built apartment will go a long way to address this challenge.
The 93rd-anniversary celebration was held under the theme: “Supporting the Foundation that Shapes Future Generations”
A parade, funfair, razzmatazz, and inspiring speeches characterized the anniversary celebration with past and present students as well as celebrated national figures gracing the event in their numbers.
