A student of Elmina Methodist Junior High School in the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo Abrem Municipality, Abraham Victor Nortey has won the presidential award for the best student male category in the Central Region for the 2022 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
His victory is considered an outstanding achievement after emerging as the best candidate among the sixty-three thousand, one hundred and eighty-seven (63,187) registered candidates for the 2022 BECE in the Central Region.
This was disclosed to ATLFM NEWS in an exclusive interview on Tuesday, February 28, 2023, by the Head Teacher of the school, Jacob Andzie Quiainoo, who said this is the second consecutive time that a student of Elmina Methodist J.H.S is receiving such a prize.
The first award was in 2021 given to Eunice Amoono Ennin also of Elmina Methodist J.H.S.
Mr. Andzie Quiainoo attributed this achievement to the discipline the school management has instituted to ensure maximum academic performance in the school.
“For you to have a call from your regional director telling you that is the call from the headquarters through the president, I think it is the biggest honor you can have as the head teacher. Basically, it is all about discipline. One thing we came to realize is that most Ghanaian children now don’t want to be disciplined in any way. I’m not talking about caning, but I’m talking about being able to sit down and then know what you want, prepare what you want to achieve, and prepare towards it using the right and the correct way of doing it.”
He added that his school is aiming at working hard to retain this achievement for the third consecutive time in the region and to claim the ultimate overall best candidate in the country.
He said the school is trying to make it a triple achievement “to make sure that it is cemented and becomes unprecedented for other people to chase.”
Mr. Andzie Quiainoo however urged students, especially those at the basic level in the region and beyond to take their academics seriously as success lies with hard work.
He further called on all stakeholders especially parents to contribute their quota to aid in the achievement of the desired academic excellence in Ghana.
