The Director of the Directorate of Public Affairs at the University of Cape Coast, Major (rtd) Kofi Baah-Bentum has called on all schoolchildren to develop the habit of reading to help broaden their knowledge and horizons.
He explained that if children read a lot of books in addition to their lessons in the classroom, it would help them build a wide vocabulary so that they can read and write well and perform brilliantly in school.
Speaking at the 55th Speech and Prize Giving Day of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) Primary School on the theme: ” 58 years of Quality Primary Education: Expanding the Frontiers”, he also admonished school children to take their academic work seriously, follow good morals and values to make them better citizens.
The Director entreated all stakeholders to help in the character building and discipline of children and urged the students to be focused and spend more time with their books rather than watching television programmes which did not benefit them.
In her report, the headmistress of the school, Mrs Georgina Aglobitse mentioned inadequate tables and chairs, security issues, leaking roof and indiscipline as some of the challenges militating against the school.
She said these challenges exist even though management and PTA are working assiduously to have these them ameliorated
She, therefore, called on all stakeholders to support the vision of the school to continue to improve its laurels and make it one of choice.
In an interview with ATL FM NEWS, she indicated that pupils from the school have been chalking success both nationally and internationally despite the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“The very current one is the Spelling B contest. We had one at the national level and some children qualified. They went to Dubai for the international one and those who excel from there went to Malawi, out of which 25 countries, So our school represented Ghana. We have excelled in so many writing, competition, arts and a whole lot.” She emphasized.
She attributed the successes chalked to the hard work of staff and teachers who are very devoted and committed to their duties.
The 55th Speech and Prize Giving Day was used to honour deserving teachers and pupils in the school for distinguishing themselves.
Some of the awardees spoke to ATL FM NEWS and expressed joy in receiving awards.
One Awardee said “I’m very happy to win this award because I have learnt hard throughout all these years and so it’s a very big privilege to win this award. So I encourage all my colleagues and other friends to learn hard to receive the award next year.”
“I’m very thankful to all the people who encourage me to learn hard and I encourage all my friends and colleagues to learn hard so that next year they can also get awards.” Said another awardee.
