The University of Cape Coast chapter of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has officially launched its women’s week celebration in an effort to empower women in the Cape Coast Metropolis.
The event under the auspices of the office of the women’s Commission, NUGS was also to unveil the sanitary Bank project which is an initiative to promote menstrual hygiene.
The event was to simultaneously raise funds to support underprivileged girls who cannot afford menstrual towels and is being held on the theme “As a woman: Putting my best foot forward”.
According to the women’s commissioner, Amoanimaa Sarpong Resta, the program was developed to raise the standards of women in society and also help connect students to successful career women who can mentor them towards achieving their goals.
Amoanimaa Sarpong Resta said it is important for young ladies to effectively plan and set goals for their future.
She notes that “most young ladies on campus don’t plan their lives. They leave their lives anyhow they want and when great opportunities present themselves for growth and development because of their past, they are deterred from moving forward. We also realize that most young ladies plan their lives around the men but the men we don’t see that.”
Amoanimaa, therefore, urged all students to take advantage of the various scheduled programs in this regard as well as support the sanitary bank project.
“The sanitary bank project is a project that we want to use to educate young ladies about their menstrual health. The project is not only for university students, we want to also visit junior high and senior schools because we realize that in recent times mothers hardly have time to teach their children on such issues.” She continued.
The women’s commissioner further appealed to all well-meaning Ghanaians to support this course as NUGS intends to distribute free pads to students after educating them.
The director for programs with the Pan-African female Youth leaders (PANAFYL), Doris Akalachiba Asandem said the celebration was timely and emphasized the need for young women to put in significant efforts to uphold their place in society despite the numerous challenges they face.
She notes that, though women generally are not in competition with men in society, it is needful for them to stand out wherever they find themselves.
“So please as women, you need to make yourself recognized in society by learning, by planning our lives very well.” She added.
Activities scheduled for the week celebration include Entrepreneurship training, Kanekalon Hair and Braids festivals, Health screening, career mentorship program among others.
