The Central Regional Representative of the Ghana Music Rights Organization (GHAMRO), Mr. Jacob Kakra Ewusi has secured a judgment in his favor after suing Francis Donkoh, popularly known as “Daddy Yoo” and John Wall Company limited (Cape FM) for defamation.
The judgment by the Cape Coast District Court indicated that Daddy Yoo and the John Wall Company Limited are to pay damages amounting to GHS 8,500 to Mr. Ewusi.
‘Daddy Yoo’ falsely claimed, among other things, that Mr. Kakra Ewusi was a thief who misappropriated GHAMRO funds in his Cape FM show on July 7, 2021, and on February 22, 2022, respectively”.
Following this statement, Mr. Ewusi filed a defamation suit at the Cape Coast District Court 1.
The court however referred the case to the Court Connected Alternative Dispute Resolution (CCADR) for peaceful settlement outside of court.
Subsequently, the court’s judgment on September 12, 2022, ordered that Daddy Yoo retract all his defamatory remarks made against Mr. Ewusi and he must do it 4 times a week for 5 months, from September 2022 to January 2023 on the same medium where he originally made those remarks.
Additionally, Mr. Ewusi must appear on Daddy Yoo’s show once a week to retract his defamatory statement and to encourage music users to pay royalties.
ATL FM News spoke to Mr. Ewusi after court proceedings and he expressed joy at the favorable verdict.
He said “I’m ok because the tension was so much and this affected my family, my church. I stay at Amamoma and I’m part of the opinion leaders so this issue severally affected my hard-earned reputation in my community. So, I’m very happy that the verdict went in my favor.”
He implored broadcast journalists to get their facts rights before publishing it adding that they also discuss issues devoid of personal opinions when they do not have facts.
Mr. Jacob Kakra Ewusi further urged the public to emulate his actions in the face of like circumstances to seek redress from the right institutions rather than taking matters into their own hands.
