The School of Allied Health Sciences under the College of Health and Allied Sciences at UCC will next year award outstanding lecturers at its annual Dean’s Awards Ceremony.

This was revealed by the Dean of the School, Professor Desmond Omane Acheampong at the 2022 edition of his outfit’s Dean’s Award Ceremony held on Tuesday, August 30 at UCC.

“Already we have Dean’s awards for students but we also think we need to award the lecturers who teach the students so, we are thinking of awarding lecturers come next Academic year,” he said.

According to him, the decision to award outstanding lecturers in the school in addition to deserving students is to motivate them to work hard to improve academic work as they discharge their respective duties.

He however noted that lecturers to be awarded will be determined by students.

“The various levels in the school will be allowed to nominate lecturers and the lecturer who comes out with the highest nomination will be awarded…and students will always look at other things, not only teaching but how they relate with them” He continued.

He believes a step in this direction will help the lecturer relate better with the students and it will help improve academic work.

Prof. Omane Acheampong further indicated that in order to effectively equip students with the requisite skills they will need for the job market, the School of Allied Health Sciences is doing its best to adequately equip its labs with modern equipment.

He explained that in order to do this, the school is not only looking up to the Central Administration of the University which has been supportive over the years but seeking external support.

“Recently we signed an MoU with a renowned laboratory in the UK and we are looking at establishing a lab here to help train students. In fact, we are going to even inaugurate the collaboration Centre in the coming weeks”

Prof. Omane Acheampong said the MoU is expected to bridge the gap between academia and industry as the laboratory will aid in training the students through exchange programmes.

A total of 60 students were awarded a certificate and a cash amount at the ceremony. The categories for the awarding included the departmental level awards, second best student awards, and Dean’s award for overall best students. The criterion for selecting the awardees was students who had obtained a CGPA of 3.5 and above.

The former Dean of the School, Professor Emmanuel Abu urged the awardees to strive to maintain their positions next year but urged all students with the school to consider becoming entrepreneurs after school if they want to be wealthy.
