Security analyst, Adib Saani says there is growing insecurity in schools following recent attacks among students in tertiary institutions in the country.
His assertion follows Thursday’s clashes between students at Katanga and Unity Halls at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
The clash according to reports, occurred when Katanga Hall students entered the territory of Unity Hall during a procession as part of their hall week celebration.
Both factions pelted each other with stones and sticks and got several cars damaged in the process.
According to the security analyst, there is a cycle of impunity and indiscipline on campuses in Ghana and there must be a sustainable solution against the recurrence of such incidents.
To him, once there is a criminal element in such instances, perpetrators should be handed over to the police to face the law.
He said, “such a person should be arrested and the person made to pass through the legal processes, and even if it means he should be jailed then so be it.”
According to him, incidents of this nature keep occurring probably because perpetrators are restricted to the school disciplinary committee with students also believing the university environment gives them immunity.
“Let’s not constrict to the school’s disciplinary process, hand over such people to the police” he emphasized.
To Mr. Adib Saani, such incidents are worrying and becoming like a breeding ground for vandalism instead of level-headed citizens poised to help in developing the state.
“Gradually there is a growing sense of insecurity on our campuses and it’s spreading,” he said.
Meanwhile, the University Students Association of Ghana (USAG) has condemned violent clashes between two factions.
In a statement, the association questioned, “Why must we now retrogress in our advocacy for our rights and improved academic lives by engaging in such acts?”
They charged the leaders of JCRs and SRCs to rise to task and jointly help in channeling “this youthful exuberance into productive ventures.”
