The University of Cape Coast has awarded scholarships amounting to GHS 577,111 to 318 undergraduate and post-graduate regular students of the University.

Among them are 19 students from the various communities surrounding the University of Cape Coast who received concessionary awards.

The amount disbursed to the various colleges is in a bid to pay for their tuition cost.

The students were selected based on their financial circumstances and attainment of CGPA of 2.5 or better. However, for the concessionary scholarship, the CGPA was reduced to 2.0.

At the 2nd Edition of the University of Cape Coast Scholarship Awards, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong indicated that the awards formed part of the University’s efforts to alleviate the financial burden on some needy but brilliant students in the university.

He said presently, the student financial support office has opened the call for application to College of Distance Education students and the call is ongoing until the end of March 2022.

“It is also believed that the University will be providing more money next academic year so that we can increase the number from 318 to about 400,” he added.

Prof Johnson Nyarko Boampong further revealed that in a bid to support the surrounding communities, the university will construct a washroom for the Amamoma community and the project will commence “hopefully by two weeks’ time”.

The Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Chairperson of the students’ financial support Office, Professor Rosemond Boohene revealed that the Office plans to implement some initiatives in the future to make the scheme more vibrant and attractive.

The UCC Scholarship Awards is an intervention to ensure that the dreams of students are not cut short as a result of their inability to pay their fees and cater for some basic needs.

She said the office intends to roll out other programs such as the work-study program, and source for more funds and partners who will be able to contribute towards the provision of the scholarships to students.

“We are also looking at establishing a volunteering scheme where those who have received the various awards would be able to give back to the society or in the communities in which they find themselves,” she added

Assistance

The assistance comes in the form of full or partial scholarships, provision of accommodation, fees arrangement, and on-campus work-study or part-time jobs.

This year, a total of 1,564 persons applied for the scholarships through the Students’ Financial Support Office of the University.

The Omanhene of Oguaa traditional area, Osabarima Kwesi Atta II praised the University for taking such an initiative to help needy but brilliant and promising students, particularly those from the university’s surrounding communities.

Break down of awards
