A lecturer with the Department of Statistics at the University of Cape Coast, Dr. Irene Kafui Vorsah Amponsah has bemoaned the underutilization of professional statisticians in the electoral processes of Ghana.
She believes that the statistician’s function of collating and storing data could be utilized to make the presidential and parliamentary elections less stressful.
Dr. Kafui Amponsah an exclusive interview with ATLFMNEWS suggested that “statisticians through their expertise can write simple programs and work hand in hand with IT personnel, to link the Ghana card to a code to make it easier for voting to be done on a smartphone in the comfort of one’s home”.
The illiterates and individuals without access to smartphones, she explains can be made to go to a particular designated area to cut down the long queues during voting.
..and it should be secured and exclusive. The people at the data bank at the electoral commission unit should be able to receive that data simply and use it,” she emphasized.
“We know that we had gone through the process of acquiring a national identity card and that process engaged us to have our biometric information taken, the most extensive so far in Ghana. So if we were going to vote amidst the Covid 19 must we go and queue again? She questioned.
To her, engaging statisticians in the electoral process will serve the country a great deal of good and reduce the causalities and financial loss that accompany the traditional electoral process of the country.
Dr. Vorsah also urged institutions and organizations to consider engaging the services of statisticians in their offices to rally with the technological world.
She indicates that the services of statistics will help businesses organizations achieve great feats in the competitive business world.
