We fully endorse staff payment of rent for occupying government bungalows – GES Management

The Management of the Ghana Education Service (GES) says it fully backs the circular issued by its Western Regional Director on March 11, 2022 that with effect from March 1, 2022 all Teachers/Staff occupying School/Government bungalow are to pay 10% of their basic salary as rent.

According to the management, the payment of the 10% is necessary to avoid queries raised by external auditors on the issue of rent paid by some staff of GES occupying government bungalows and the Service’s subsequent appearance before the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament.

In a press release signed by Casandra Twum-Ampofo, Head of GES Public Relations Unit and issued on Wednesday 16^th March, 2022, noted “in order to avoid further audit queries which culminate in summons before the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament on the issue of rent paid by some staff of GES occupying Government Bungalows official as accommodation, the Director-General has directed all Cost Centre Managers of the Service  to be guided by the Ministry of Finance’s Circular No. 133385/05/06 NTR CAGD on 15^th May 2006 and charge the appropriate rent of 10 percent on the basic salary of staff who occupy  Government Bungalows official as accommodation.”

While giving further clarification on the rent payment, the management of the GES indicated that the Western Regional’s Director’s letter was based on the recommendations of the External Auditors and the directives of the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament that GES should charge the appropriate rent on staff occupying Government Bungalows.

“Management of GES wishes to reiterate that it is not the GES which is imposing the rent or determining how much is to be paid but purely guided by the Ministry of Finance’s Circular and the admonitions of the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament,” it stressed.

Meanwhile it says it will soon meet the leadership of unions who have raised concerns on the subject matter.
