Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Railways Company Limited (GCRL), Thomas Brown says education on train safety protocols will be intensified to avert any future re-occurrence of unfortunate incidents on railways.

This follows the stampede incident on a train that occurred on Thursday 10th March 2022 at Takoradi leaving scores injured.

More than 50 passengers including students of Bompeh Senior High School sustained various degrees of injuries when the fault alert of a 15-kilometer Takoradi via-Kojokrom to Sekondi passenger train service was triggered and locked all passengers in.

In an attempt to get out, several passengers destroyed the glass windows of the train resulting in some of them sustaining cuts in the arm and legs.

Describing the situation as unfortunate, Mr. Brown said in the wake of this incident, passengers will be engaged in a series of training to ensure their safety on a train.

Speaking to ATLFMNEWS he said “now we have started doing more to have daily interactions, daily communication with our passengers before they board the train. We will be engaging them on the several checks that we do on the train. Once we let them know of all these things, they will be assured of their safety and not get frightened when such incidence happens.”

He added that his outfit will also continue with community engagement using the media to also educate and sensitize passengers about the safety of the train.

Giving an update on the state of the injured, Mr. Brown indicated that most of them have been treated and discharged.
