The Prime Minister of Barbados, Her Excellency Mia Amor Mottley says the struggle by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and other leaders for the independence of Ghana in 1957 was an inspiration to many across the world.
Speaking as a special guest of honour at the 65th Independence anniversary celebration in Cape Coast, she said Ghana’s independence from colonial rule motivated other countries to pursue their independence agenda.
She said “for us, you were the beacon that shone the light almost one decade before we came”.
She also stated that Ghana’s achievement prompted her government to invite President Nana Akufo-Addo to speak at the inauguration of Barbados’ Parliament last year.
She revealed that “ it is significant sir, that when you spoke and shared your message with us, as a Barbadian nation you indicated that it was our great fortune to be able to complete this circle of self- determination at the time when the world has so readily embraced the principles of democracy and enfranchisement”.
She further emphasized “Ghana’s independence serves as an anchor that helps us to stand tall even as racism and imperialism is rearing its ugly head in the world again”.
Honourable Mottley also used the occasion to rally Ghanaians to reject the notion of first-class and second-class global citizens.
“We must not never accept that there are first class or second citizens or nations in the world. And we equally assert that there cannot be first class or second nations the global community,” she intimated.

She stated the need to work together in solidarity to fight the battles of our time adding that whatever the problem it may be, we have a duty to stand tall and protect the principles of democracy and the principles that are anchored in the Constitution.
Solidarity Messages
The Government of the United States of America, in a press statement has congratulated Ghana on attaining the age of 65.
The statement issued by US Secretary of State, Antony J. Blinken said the American government values the longstanding partnership between the United States and Ghana, which has advanced the two countries’ mutual economic, security, public health, human rights, and democratic governance interests.
“On behalf of the Government of the United States of America, I congratulate all Ghanaians home and abroad on the anniversary of Ghana’s independence on March 6”, Mr. Blinken said.
The statement further said “on this occasion, we reflect on our shared history and many people-to-people ties, and recommit ourselves to deepening our partnership. We also commend Ghana on its commitment to democracy in its leadership of the Economic Community of West African States”.
Russia’s President, Vladimir Putin in a brief message said to president Akufo Addo, “I wish you good health and every success, as well as happiness and prosperity to all your compatriots.”
“Please accept my sincere congratulations on the occasion of the National Holiday of the Republic of Ghana – the Independence Day.”
He noted that Ghana and Russia’s relationship continues to be a cordial one. President Putin also urged for further development of a constructive bilateral dialogue and partnership.
