Lectures at the University of Cape Coast have begun as the University Teachers Association of Ghana- UTAG, UCC branch return to teach today. This is in compliance with the directive from the National Executive Council of UTAG suspending the association’s six weeks old strike.
A press release from UTAG NEC called on its members to resume teaching. The release signed by the National President and Secretary, Prof Solomon Nunoo and Dr. Asare Asante Anor respectively, said going back to the lecture halls to teach will be in compliance with the court’s directive and will afford the association the space to negotiate with the employer on their conditions of service.
The Executive Committee of the Academic Board of UCC, at an emergency meeting held on Wednesday, February 23, decided that academic activities, particularly teaching, for the first semester of the 2021/2022 academic calendar should officially resume today.
ATLFM’s visit to the academic area of UCC Campus showed some lectures had started as early as 6:30 am. Other lecture halls also had students seated for their lectures to commence.
All branches of UTAG across the country are holding referenda to decide on whether to agree with NEC’s decision to suspend the strike in compliance with a High Court order or not.
About eight of the branches have so far voted against the decision to suspend the strike.
The University of Cape Coast is however yet to make its decision in that regard.
But in the statement, UTAG said while the referenda will end today, February 28, 2022, NEC will have five days to consider the results and make a final decision.
In the interim, it said, its members in accordance with the UTAG constitution are to return to the lecture halls and teach.
