The West Africa Education Council (WAEC) has stated that the ongoing Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) will be leak-proof.
Between today, Monday, November 15, and Friday, November 19, 2021, a total of 571, 894 applicants will sit for the test at 2,158 locations countrywide.
Speaking ahead of the exams, the Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, Agnes Teye-Cudjoe, said “the Council has done everything that needs to be done to ensure that the examination is done successfully to safeguard the integrity of the exam.”
Mrs. Teye Cudjoe said that even during the printing of the questions, the WAEC asked the National Intelligence Bureau to monitor the process.
“… So they were there to watch over the printing in addition to the Ghana Police and the Council’s security,” she said.
“Having a successful exam is a collective responsibility. Now WAEC has compiled questions, printed, packed, and distributed, and we are handing them over to supervisors at the various centres,” she outlined.
WASSCE leaks
Recently, WAEC has been under fire for exam leaks, most notably from the education think tank Africa Education Watch.
Already, Dr. Clement Apaak, the Minority’s Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament’s Education Committee, has said that the Minority would seek a thorough investigation into the 2021 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
This was in response to a claim by Africa Education Watch that 55% of exam papers were leaked between 10 and 1 hour before the exam began.
Africa Education Watch had previously petitioned the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to investigate the matter following WAEC’s announcement that extracts of questions for the elective Mathematics 2 paper and Section ‘A’ of English Language 2 were circulated on several social media platforms prior to the examination.
WAEC, on the other hand, said that the circulation was not widespread.
Additionally, the Council postponed two papers — one on physics and another on business management.
