A 55-year-old man died while attempting to flee a COVID-19 treatment center in the Western Region’s Effia, near Sekondi.
On Wednesday, August 18, 2021, the deceased, Paulus Okine, was sent to the treatment center from the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital’s Emergency and Accident unit.
The deceased was seen leaving the COVID-19 treatment center by security officers on the morning of August 19th.
When the security officer asked why he was going, he allegedly threatened to hurt the guard if he pursued him.
After some time, he was discovered dead near the nurses’ quarters in the neighborhood.
Clinicians from Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital verified Mr. Okine’s death, and the matter has been reported to the Sekondi District Police command, who arrived at the site on Thursday morning to assist management.
The corpse has subsequently been placed in the mortuary at the hospital.
According to the hospital’s Deputy Director of Nursing Services, Madam Justina Amo Yartey, “the security man used another way to catch him and he also opted to take another route to flee, but I believe he fell and died before he got to the departure point.” I am very saddened by his loss since he should have received treatment. There is no need to flee if you have been confirmed COVID-19 positive.”
She also urged the general population to carefully adhere to the Covid-19 guidelines since the illness is real.
“I will encourage individuals who do not use face masks to do so since COVID-19 instances have been on the rise recently… Let us carefully follow all of the protocols; use hand sanitizers, wash hands under running water, and so on. Also, if your COVID-19 status has been verified, do not dispute it. Simply take your time and get treatment,” she said.
