University of Ghana and University of Cape Coast shine at the 2022 GUSA Cross Country

After a two year break, due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA) commenced its outlined sports activities with the organization of the 2022 GUSA cross country on Saturday, August 13, 2022.

The 25th edition of the inter-university 10km-race was successfully held for the first time in the Volta region, Ho at the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) and was the under the theme ‘Running for Health.’

Ten (10) schools participated in the men’s division while seven (7) schools showed up for the competition.

For the men’s race. National athlete, William Amponsah of University of Education, Winneba (UEW) won gold fresh from representing Ghana at the 2022 Birmingham commonwealth games with a time of 29.17. Atia Koogo (UEW) won silver after clocking 29.55.53 while Arthur Ishmael picked bronze in a time of 30.09.41

Sarah Koomson of University of Development Studies (UDS) came first in the women’s division, finishing the race with a time of 35.25.88. Titi Rosina of University of Cape Coast (UCC) finished second in 36.25.50 while Hilda Bayor picked the third spot, clocking 38.45.13.

But for the overall score, University of Cape Coast (UCC) and University of Ghana (UG) won gold medals in the male and female categories respectively.

University of Ghana emerged victorious in the overall men’s race with 47 points while University of Cape Coast came first in the women’s race with 53 points.

The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) and University of Development Studies (UDS), won silver and bronze respectively in the female category with 65 and 118 points whereas UEW and UCC scored 88 and 94 points to secure the second and third positions in the male category.

GUSA will now continue with preparations for the organization of GUSA Games at KNUST in November 2022 to wrap up the calendar’s sporting activities.
