Ex-Spurs Captain Shocked by the Decision to Sack Postecoglou
Even players who never worked directly under Ange Postecoglou are voicing their support after his surprising dismissal from Tottenham Hotspur. Former Spurs skipper Hugo Lloris, who served the club faithfully for over a decade, expressed his shock at seeing the Australian coach let go. Postecoglou had guided Tottenham to end a 17-year trophy drought by winning the Europa League, which also earned them a spot in the Champions League. However, the club chose to part ways with him following their worst-ever Premier League finish.

Lloris Reflects on Postecoglou’s Success and the Harsh Reality
Lloris, now preparing to represent LAFC in the Club World Cup against Chelsea, reflected on the achievement and how much it meant to the Spurs community. “Yes, but in football nothing surprises you anymore,” he said when asked if Levy’s decision caught him off guard. He praised Postecoglou’s contributions and leadership, highlighting how the coach deserved recognition for ending the long-standing silverware drought. Lloris noted the impact injuries had on the squad and felt the team deliberately shifted focus toward the Europa League in the second half of the season, ultimately a decision that paid off with a historic win.

Balancing Success and Club Expectations
The French goalkeeper emphasized the difficulty of balancing league expectations with cup success. While his Spurs era often saw them chasing top-four Premier League finishes, actual trophies remained elusive. “We never managed to win even a League Cup or Europa League, but we got top four often. Still, this trophy means more in many ways,” Lloris admitted. He believes winning silverware, even with a low league finish, is a significant milestone and something the club should celebrate and build upon.

Gratitude for the Club’s Breakthrough and Hope for the Future
Lloris said he was thrilled for the supporters, who had waited for so long to celebrate a meaningful trophy. “I’m really happy for the club. We chased this for years and finally, they did it,” he said, hoping the success would give the club momentum. Despite now playing elsewhere, he revealed that he still follows Spurs and wishes them the best.

On Thomas Frank’s Appointment
Commenting briefly on Thomas Frank, who was appointed to replace Postecoglou, Lloris acknowledged the former Brentford manager’s talent. “He’s a respected coach and did great at Brentford. Starting at a new club means adapting, but the decision was surely made with the club’s future in mind,” he concluded.
