Reflecting on the game, Whelan said Mayo left everything on the pitch. “You can’t question their passion or effort,” he said. “They brought chaos to Donegal’s structured play and gave it everything.” But Whelan also highlighted a recurring issue: Mayo’s lack of reliable point-scorers. “They had eight shots from play in the first half and couldn’t find scorers. That’s been their Achilles heel.”

Whelan noted that the earlier loss to Cavan will sting for a long time. “It’s another heartbreak. They’ll look back on that and know it cost them dearly.” Despite the intensity and desire, Mayo’s downfall was in small details.
Final Seconds Seal Mayo’s Fate
With seconds remaining, Donegal could have secured second place by simply ending the game. Instead, Ciarán Moore seized the moment. Receiving the ball near the sideline, he surged forward and fired over the winning point, leaving Mayo no time to respond. The score didn’t change Donegal’s position, but it shattered Mayo’s hopes and allowed Cavan to sneak through.
Whelan summed it up: “If Mayo had held on and won, they would have topped the group. But Donegal were just that bit more ruthless in the end.”
