Artificial Intelligence (AI) in journalistic writing evokes mixed feelings, especially among those seeking to maintain their creativity in writing.

While AI offers several advantages in the rapidly evolving media landscape, journalists often react with a mix of excitement and curiosity when it is mentioned.

Outside, the bustling sounds of Accra provided a stark contrast to the focused energy inside, where a group of young Ghanaian journalists were witnessing a technological revolution unfold before their eyes.

Glowing screens illuminated their faces as they delved into the world of Artificial Intelligence (AI), a world that promised to forever change their approach to storytelling. Among them was Kwame Osei, a journalist eager to embrace the future.

This was the “AI in Journalism” workshop, a three-day immersion organized by the United States Agency for Global Media (USAGM) in partnership with Voice of America (VoA). The workshop aimed to equip the next generation of Ghanaian journalists with the tools and knowledge they need to navigate the rapidly evolving media landscape.

And for Kwame, the experience was nothing short of transformative. “AI doesn’t stifle creativity; it enhances it,” Kwame exclaimed, his voice filled with newfound enthusiasm. “This training has fundamentally changed my approach to story development and production, making my work much easier.”

The workshop, a blend of hands-on sessions and insightful discussions, quickly dispelled many of the initial concerns surrounding AI. Would it replace the human touch? Would it diminish creativity? These questions lingered in the background, but the practical sessions soon revealed a different reality.

Kwame recalls the moment when AI tools seamlessly handled tasks like data analysis and language translation, freeing up valuable time for deeper investigation and more compelling narratives.

“I used to fear AI would replace my job,” Kwame admitted, “but now I see it as a powerful ally. It allows me to focus on crafting compelling narratives while it handles repetitive tasks.” The shift in perspective was palpable, not just for Kwame, but for many of his peers.

The workshop wasn’t just about technical skills; it was about unlocking new creative potential. Participants explored AI-powered video editing software, which simplified multimedia content production, and tools that analyzed social media trends in real-time, offering fresh insights into the issues shaping Ghana. It was a glimpse into the future of journalism—a future where technology would empower them to tell more nuanced, impactful stories.

As the workshop drew to a close, a sense of gratitude permeated the room. Kwame, like many others, expressed his thanks to USAGM and VoA for providing such a valuable opportunity.

“I feel incredibly fortunate to have been part of this training,” he said. “Access to such cutting-edge knowledge in our field is rare, and I’m grateful to USAGM and VoA for believing in the potential of young journalists like me.”

More than just professional growth, the workshop offered a renewed sense of purpose and hope. Kwame envisions a media landscape where AI allows journalists to tell richer, more inclusive stories that resonate with diverse audiences, creating a more informed and empowered society.

But the training went beyond technicalities, delving into the ethical considerations of using AI in journalism. Lively discussions focused on maintaining journalistic integrity, combating disinformation, and ensuring transparency in AI-driven reporting.

For Kwame, these lessons were critical. “Journalism is about trust,” he emphasized, “and this training reminded us that technology should never compromise our core values. Instead, it should enhance our ability to inform and empower society.”

As Kwame returns to his newsroom, he brings with him not just new skills, but a renewed sense of purpose. He’s already brainstorming ways to integrate AI into his daily workflow, from generating fresh story ideas to creating more engaging multimedia content. The possibilities, he believes, are endless.
