The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has called for a full investigation into what he labels as GH¢22 billion losses incurred through the Bank of Ghana’s domestic gold purchase programme.
Speaking at a press conference at the Foyer of Parliament on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, Mr Afenyo-Markin mentioned that the findings contained in the International Monetary Fund’s latest report on Ghana’s economy, which he cited as US$1.7 billion, equivalent to about GH¢22 billion, were losses to GoldBod’s gold operations in 2025.
The Member of Parliament for Effutu questioned the arrangement between the Ghana Gold Board and the Bank of Ghana, arguing that while GoldBod was involved in the purchase, aggregation, assaying and export of gold, the Bank of Ghana bore the financial losses.
Hon. Afenyo-Markin alleged that the arrangement raises concerns about transparency, accountability and risk management.
Afenyo-Markin further requested that GoldBod should clarify how gold prices were determined, how international offtakers were selected, the discounts offered on gold sales and the fees earned from transactions financed by the Bank of Ghana.
He urged the Majority in Parliament to support a proposed motion for a parliamentary probe into the reported losses, mentioning that the Ghanaian taxpayer deserves clear answers.
Afenyo-Markin affirmed that the Minority would not relent in demanding accountability over the reported GH¢22 billion loss.
