The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has intensified enforcement across the Central Region after uncovering regulatory breaches at hospitality establishments, resulting in the temporary closure of four facilities.
The affected establishments are Elmina Beach Resort in Elmina, as well as Savoy Hotel, Veke Executive Lodge and Wiz Homes, an Airbnb property, all in Cape Coast.
According to the GTA, breaches identified during the exercise included operating without valid licences, failure to pay the tourism levy, substandard facilities and poor service delivery.
Four Facilities Shut Down
The enforcement exercise forms part of efforts to improve standards within the region’s hospitality industry, particularly ahead of the Oguaa Fetu Afahye celebrations in September.
The GTA has also placed caution notices on some unlicensed facilities after receiving information that they were preparing to accommodate visitors during the festive period.
Central Regional Director of Tourism Charles Buabin said the affected establishments had failed to comply despite receiving several warnings from the Authority.
Airbnb Operators Put on Notice
Mr Buabin stressed that short-term accommodation providers, including properties marketed through Airbnb, are required to register with the GTA and obtain the appropriate licence before operating.
He explained that accommodation businesses cannot avoid Ghana’s tourism regulations simply because they operate through online platforms.
The directive means individuals offering homes, apartments and other properties to paying guests must comply with the same regulatory requirements applicable to accommodation enterprises.

Facilities Must Meet Conditions Before Reopening
The GTA says the four establishments will not be permitted to reopen until they correct the identified breaches and pay the applicable regulatory fines.
The Authority is also urging other hospitality operators to regularise their operations before enforcement teams reach them.
Public Urged to Check Licensing Status
Members of the public have been advised to verify whether hotels, lodges, guest houses and other accommodation facilities are properly licensed before making reservations.
The GTA says enforcement activities will continue across the Central Region as it seeks to protect visitors, improve service standards and ensure compliance within the tourism industry.
