The University of Cape Coast (UCC) is set to make history this Friday as it honours Her Excellency, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, with the Distinguished Fellow Award.
The accolade recognizes her exceptional contributions to academia, national development, and trailblazing leadership.
A Historic New Category of Excellence
While UCC has traditionally conferred honorary degrees, Professor Peter Grant, the Chair of the Award Planning Committee, explains that this new category is designed for alumni and senior members who have made a “renowned” impact nationally and globally.
Prof. Grant noted that the Vice President’s profile, filled with historic “firsts,” including being the first female Vice-Chancellor of a public university, made her the unanimous choice for this inaugural award.
“Basically, we are looking at people who are alumni and senior members of the university…who have done something of renown, with impact on UCC, nationally and globally. That is the base criteria,” Prof. Grant explained.
High-Security Ceremony and Academic Suspension
The ceremony, scheduled for Friday, March 13, at 2:00 PM at the New Examination Centre (NEC), is expected to be a high-security event with the President of the Republic and members of the diplomatic corps in attendance.
To ensure a smooth and dignified programme, the University has announced that all formal activities, including lectures and exams, will be suspended on Friday.
Strict “Zero Lateness” Policy
The Acting Director of Public Affairs, Dr. Kwabena Antwi-Konadu, emphasized that security protocols will be strictly enforced.
He issued a firm “zero lateness” warning to all attendees, regardless of their rank or position.
“All doors and security positions will be taken. No one, no matter who you are, will be allowed to enter once the programme begins at 2:00 PM,” Dr. Antwi-Konadu warned.
Traffic and Parking Arrangements
Dr. Antwi-Konadu advised those driving to the venue to follow the traffic rules and parking put in place to ensure smooth entry to the programme.
“…We see what happens during these programs. Due to euphoria, people want to come in buses; please note that there will be directional signs. People will be at all places to make sure that you are given a place to park your cars and then walk to the venue,” he said.
Dr. Antwi-Konadu expressed hope that with the support of the industry community, those coming from far and near would have a very successful programme.
He urged the university community to see the Vice President as a symbol of the discipline and excellence that UCC represents.
